The Libraries for Learning project has now produced its final report, Londoners Still Need to Read. This report contains an overview of Skills for life in libraries and museums and MLA London's work to date in the area, highlights the outputs and outcomes of the project, and makes recommendations for taking the successful work of the project forward.

| Museums, libraries and archives Setting the Pace for the Cultural Olympiad |

Over 40 museums, libraries and archives in 25 London boroughs will be hosting activities to celebrate the Olympic handover from Beijing to London in August, the Paralympic Handover on 17 September, and the launch of the Cultural Olympiad at the end of September.
This will mark the first Phase of the national Setting the Pace programme which MLA London has been developing with MLA Council and our sector for the whole of the Cultural Olympiad which runs from September this year until 2012. |

| Royal Society ‘Local heroes’ grant opportunity |

| As part of a year long programme to celebrate its 350th anniversary in 2010, the Royal Society will provide small grants for museums, galleries, libraries or archives to enable them to celebrate their local scientific heroes, whether they were individuals pioneers of the industrial age, geniuses that changed the way we see the world or contemporary scientists finding solutions to today's problems. |

On Tuesday library users and staff from libraries across London were met by Bill Rammell, Minister for Lifelong Learning at an event in central London to celebrate the Skilled for Health project which has been taking place in five boroughs. |

| Statement on restructuring |

At its meeting on Thursday 22 May the Board of MLA London approved the details of the new organisational structure and budget for 2008-9, following a staff consultation on proposed redundancies.
As a result of the reduction in its core grant by 25%, MLA Council, the Government's agency for museums, libraries and archives, is reconfiguring its regional operations outside London. MLA London will be discussing its future governance model with MLA Council in the coming months. |

An improvement strategy for culture and sport.
Launched at the LGA's culture, sport and tourism conference in Liverpool on 14 March 2008, this strategy paper outlines the framework for improvement in the culture and sport sector. It includes the mechanisms and tools to support self-improvement. It clarifies the roles and responsibilities in delivering the strategy of all the major stakeholders in the culture and sport sector. This is in line with the National Performance Framework and the National Improvement and Efficiency Strategy.

| New research looking at food and drink in museums, libraries and archives |

| New research looking at food and drink in museums, libraries and archives has found that catering facilities can be a valuable asset. The research, conducted by Visit London and commissioned by MLA London, found that venues generally need around 20,000 visits a year to justify extensive catering provision, and that special events are the most profitable form of catering. |
